Word of mouth may be trusted to some extent, but you also need to do some preliminary research about your new accommodation for students, like cross checking the claims of facilities and security that you will be provided in your new premises. Also, you need to pointedly ask the property manager if there are any hidden charges that he will levy on you.

If you have an outgoing personality and love to meet new people and party a lot, you should look out for an accommodation where culture evenings and parties are held out at regular intervals, say at the month ends, semester ends or weekends. While living away from your family will certainly instill a sense of freedom in you, any wrong choice in selecting right accommodation may prove counter-productive to you in the long run.
